How Ted Lasso helps us lead the Agile change at Lockheed Martin

Today’s government contractors are being asked to build some of the world’s most sophisticated systems with lowered costs, faster schedules, and unequaled reliability and quality. In this presentation, we pass on some of the lessons we have learned from coaching teams of Lockheed Martin Space product developers in using Agile processes.

Our approach has been to ensure that an investment in supporting change of people’s mindsets, learning from feedback, and investments in their processes and tools which speed the delivery of high-quality value. In most cases, speedier delivery results in reduced costs so long as care is taken to maintain quality.

To aid the pedagogical value of our presentation we have associated our ideas with elements found in the Apple TV series, “Ted Lasso”. As a coach with a deep interest in building personal relationships with his team, he coincidentally espouses principles that can effectively be applied in system development improvements.

Speakers: Anthony Earl & Jordan Stoner

Anthony Earl

Dr. Anthony Earl has deep experience with software engineering environments, software development processes and associated database designs.  He is the author of two books and many papers on those topics and the original author of the NIST/ECMA Reference Model for Software Engineering Environments.

Since 2013 he has been a SAFe SPC and helped organizations in both making the transition to SAFe and executing within the framework.  He joined Lockheed Martin in 2020 and has since been involved in both delivering a wide variety of SAFe classes and coaching some major Lockheed Martin programs.

Jordan Stoner

Jordan Stoner is an Agile Coach on multiple programs at Lockheed Martin Space.  As a member of the Software Factory team Jordan teaches multiple Agile and Scaled Agile Courses, helping Lockheed Martin learn and understand how to win and execute to increase our value to our customers and shareholders.

Jordan came to Lockheed Martin from Boeing, where he was a Scrummaster and Release Train Engineer on the 2nd Century Manufacturing project for the commercial side of the business.  Working in Agile since 2014, Jordan has also worked on many smaller scale Agile project both at Boeing and at his previous position at Morningstar Financial.
